Central government over-rode local government to allow this. How is that democratic?

Fracking at one of the UK's first horizontal shale exploration wells will begin next week, energy firm Cuadrilla has confirmed.
The company has drilled two wells at its Preston New Road site in Lancashire after being given the go-ahead to extract shale gas by the government.
Cuadrilla chief executive Francis Egan said the start of fracking was "the final milestone".
A last-ditch bid to halt the process is to be heard at the High Court later.
The site, near Little Plumpton, has been the scene of repeated protests from campaigners who object to hydraulic fracturing and its potential impact on the environment.
The process sees liquid pumped at high pressure deep underground to fracture rock and release gas.
In 2011, fracking operations by Cuadrilla were suspended at Preese Hall near Blackpool after they were linked with two earth tremors.

Campaigner Tina Rothery, from Frack Free Lancashire, claimed people in the area were being treated like "guinea pigs".
"We have feared and dreaded this day for seven years," she said.
"We have done everything we can that is permitted in our democracy to stop this and we have had to resort to peaceful, not direct action.
"Why is it acceptable for the government to allow us to be treated like guinea pigs?"
Cuadrilla completed the first horizontal shale gas well in April, with a second well finished in July.

The company's CEO Francis Egan said results from a six-month test period are expected early next year. These will provide information on how much gas the firm could potentially recover.
On Thursday, anti-fracking campaigner Bob Dennett from Lytham lodged papers at the High Court seeking an injunction to halt fracking operations in Little Plumpton.
He claimed there was "no clear and robust plan" to evacuate residents in the event of an earthquake resulting from fracking.
A Cuadrilla spokesman said they were aware of the "last-ditch attempt to delay our efforts" but called the grounds for a judicial review "hopelessly weak".
"We remain confident that we and Lancashire County Council have undertaken all necessary risk assessments and have thorough emergency response safety procedures in place," the spokesman added.

That rings a bell Surf. I vaguely remember reading that the US only built their first port capable of handling liquified gas very recently.
It is probably the basic geography that makes their case very different too.

Importing energy should always be a lower priority than in-nation generation/conversion. However, I don't thing fracking is the answer.

The government should be encouraging as many people as it can to be installing solar power, but it won't because generating and distributing power, however inefficient it is, is big business and lines the treasury's coffers very nicely (as well as those of (mainly foreign) investors). It probably keeps a few politicians in nice holidays, too.

All good except it isn't particularly cheap and it will be sold on the open market not kept here (the US has different rules to us).
I do agree that less we have to rely on Russia the better. It has kind of meant we rely more on Qatar for gas. Not a great choice...

Yes but as I understand it they pump wastewater underground not for fracking, but to dispose of it! Apparently that accounts for virtually all the quakes....
